But with a damp crowd still filing in, and thunder rumbling and lightning striking all around her, Musgraves, the zealously lauded 25-year-old Texan singer-songwriter, hit her mark on time.

She’s as much of a Nashville outlier as Brown, but more for her grown-up restraint than for any sense of devil-may-care personality. Up on stage, flanked by neon cacti, the winsome Musgraves is unshowy, almost laconic, which sort of fits her wry, folksy brand of Texamericana. Her flashiest stage maneuvers included a brief, leisurely stroll around a center thrust stage, and … well, that’s about it. (Unlike Taylor Swift, Musgraves probably COULD lay claim to not being a cheer captain.)

But it’s her songs that tell the story, not her voice or stage antics. Lived-in ditties like Merry Go ‘Round and Follow Your Arrow are as thoughtful as they are toe-tapping, devoid of any over-the-top bombast or climax. A song like her gorgeous, mariachi-tinged cover of George Strait’s I Just Want to Dance With You belongs in the Bluebird Cafe, not on American Idol.

Musgraves did display a bit of whimsy at the end, when, for closer My House, she and her band huddled at the center of the stage, with the boys bobbing in sparkling rhinestone suits that lit up like Christmas trees. Musgraves beamed and waved her hands, and closed the song with a simple harmonica flourish. It was quirky, earnest and endearing, something you might see on a 21st-century version of Hee Haw. Not to suggest that Musgraves is in danger of being swallowed whole by the big, bad pop charts, but a career as a theatrical folk singer, a la Alison Krauss or even Dolly Parton, could sustain her for several lifetimes.

Pop princess Katy Perry and country music darling Kacey Musgraves grace the cover of this week’s Billboard. The pairing isn’t as random as you think: the singers are teaming up for an upcoming “Crossroads” special (June 13 on CMT), and in August Musgraves joins Perry’s Prismatic world tour as opener. As Perry points out in the cover story, there’s a kinship there that goes beyond their shared backgrounds as All-American girls from conservative worlds.

“I think [Kacey] straddles the line like I straddle the line of appropriateness and still maintaining a sexuality that is healthy and exciting,” Perry says. “And it’s not all about that. It’s about sending inspiring and empowering messages and being a think-for-yourself type of woman.”

Go behind the scenes of Katy and Kacey’s Billboard cover shoot in the exclusive video interview below, plus check out five things we learned about music’s hottest tour coupling of the year.

WHY A KATY/KACEY PAIRING MAKES SENSE. “We’re both very whimsical in our own ways, but I think at heart we’re both songwriters,” says Musgraves. For her part, Perry says she “instantly connected” with her country counterpart after hearing her debut single “Merry Go ‘Round.” “She struck a chord in me,” she says. “I feel like we have the same eyes. Not in a physical sense, but in a way of perception.”

KATY STALKED KACEY. After she heard “Merry Go ‘Round” Perry did a little bit of ol’ fashioned cyberstalking — “as I do with everyone,” she notes — and reached out to Musgraves about teaming up. The songs they worked on didn’t make the cut on “Prism,” but a partnership was born.

WHAT YOU’LL HEAR ON THEIR CROSSROADS SPECIAL. Expect songs from each of Perry’s three studio albums, encompassing her fun, inspirational and singer-songwriter selves. She’ll also take a backseat during Musgraves’ set. “You’ll hear me doing a lot of background vocals… and a little of that country flair.” Musgraves will bring a “storyteller vibe” to her set, which she admits won’t have any “super-anthemic, firework-type songs.” Hearing a reference to one of her biggest hits, Perry shot back, “are you making fun of my song?”

KATY HAS SEEN KACEY NAKED. “A couple times,” Musgraves confirms. “And it won’t be the last.” They’ll have plenty more chances for dressing-room exhibitionism when Kacey joins Katy’s “Prismatic” tour in August.

AND EXPECT DUETS APLENTY ON TOUR. Kacey: “For me, you could just put all your songs in a hat and just grab any of them and I would fucking love to sing any of them.” Perry reassured her that “we’re doing that on tour.” Musgraves says that “Teenage Dream” is “obviously the best pop song ever written.”

Appearances in 2014 > April 18: CMT Crossroads with Katy Perry

LOS ANGELES—For the 50th episode of its genre-swapping performance show, “Crossroads,” CMT turned to two female performers at the top of their game: Katy Perry and Kacey Musgraves. (SPOILER ALERT: Stop reading now if you don’t know the songs they performed)

The taping, which took place Friday night (18) at Sony Studios, served as a precursor for what to expect when the two acts tour together this summer, as well as showed that the bridge between Musgraves’ traditional county tunes and Perry’s power pop isn’t as long a one as it might seem. That’s, in part, because Perry came prepared to cross the divide into country and seemed eager to show off her singer/songwriter side. For sure, she’s done that before in her ballads, such as “Not Like The Movies” or “Unconditionally,” but she’s best known for her uptempo, fun confections.

Also notable about this “Crossroads” iteration is that it’s one of the few in the more than four dozen tapings that features two solo females squaring off, following Dolly Parton and Melissa Etheridge, Martina McBride and Pat Benatar, Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson, and LeAnn Rimes and Joss Stone.

On a stage festooned with neon cacti (a motif Musgraves often employs) and palm trees, the two singers took the stage in equally sparkly outfits: Musgraves in a shorts set with fringe and hi-watt rhinestones and Perry in a glittery leotard and see-through purple skirt.

They first tackled a number of Musgraves’ tunes from her excellent debut album, “Same Trailer, Different Park,” including “Step Off,” and her breakthrough hit, “Merry Go ‘Round.” “A couple of years ago, Katy found this song and tweeted about it,” Musgraves recalled. “I was in Dublin and my Twitter starting blow up.” Perry has been a Musgraves champion ever since. As they traded off on verses on “Merry Go ‘Round,” Perry sang in a deeper, huskier register than she normally employs.

Following Musgraves’ bittersweet “Keep It To Yourself,” the two went into an even more heartbreaking tune: a cover of “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” written by Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin, and made famous by Bonnie Raitt in 1991. Their voices wrapped around each other on the sorrowful tune.

Things lightened up with Musgraves’ affirming, peppy “Follow Your Arrow,” a tune Perry revealed Musgraves played for her in the studio and even suggested Perry cut. Perry, who had kissed a girl years before Musgraves suggested the action in “Arrow,” said, “I was like, ‘you need to keep this for yourself!’” Trading versions, they shared sweet harmonies on the verses before Perry leaned over and gave Musgraves a quick peck on the cheek,

The camaraderie between the two was obvious with Musgraves playing the quieter, shier sister to Perry’s bolder, brassier, more experienced sibling, but Musgraves shrinks in no one’s shadow. After the pair had to re-record Perry’s crackling “Firework” (recast as in an acoustic, more elegant version, complete with pedal steel), Musgraves’ joked “I was perfect, that’s all I can say.” For her part, Perry said, “If I sing this song one more time, I’m going to turn into a firework.”

For their second cover, they chose Dolly Parton’s ‘70s hit, “Here You Come Again.” “One time, Katy told me I’m like Dolly Parton without the tits,” Musgraves said, with the busy Perry quickly adding, “I’m like Dolly Parton with the tits. “

While all the numbers works, the pairing really soared on Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” taking the song about young carnal love to a new, effervescent place. It was the clear highlight of the night. They ended the night with Perry’s mega hit, “Roar,” with Musgraves’ range and Perry’s power providing perfect the perfect complement to each other.

Perry and Musgraves’ episode of “Crossroads” premieres on CMT on June 13. Their tour together starts June 22.

Ariana on always looking forward: “If something great happens, I celebrate it for about—I’m not even kidding—a minute and a half. Then I start thinking about the next step.”

Kacey on why she’s direct in her songs: “It’s hard for me to swallow when someone says, ‘You’re a rebel, you’re an outlaw,’ because no, I’m not. The things I sing about are not controversial to me. The fact that they’re even considered controversial in this day and age is really sad.”
