25 to Download Before the Grammys: “11. Back on the Map”

Kacey Musgraves’ “Back on the Map” makes it in at #11 on Entertainment Weekly’s 25 to Download Before the Grammys!

11. Kacey Musgraves, “Back on the Map”
“Merry Go ‘Round” may be the one vying for Best Country Song, but “Back on the Map” — off Same Trailer Different Park, in the Best Country Album category — demonstrates the quieter strengths of this tradition-tweaking Best New Artist candidate (who damn well better win something): It’s from the perspective of an outsider, but one longing to get back in.

Kacey’s Guide to the GRAMMYs

Expect lots and lots of new for the rest of the month as Kacey gets some recognition for her GRAMMY nominations and being part of the Katy Perry Prismatic tour. We are so so excited for Kacey and what all this great stuff means for her future! ♥

I’ve never been to the Grammys. And neither has Kacey Musgraves. But that’s all about to change — for one of us, anyway.

Musgraves is heading out to Los Angeles for the big show on Jan. 26, and she gave People magazine some scoop on how she was going to prepare for her big night:

1. Bring the perfect date. For Musgraves, that will be her mom.

2. Bring your boyfriend. Luckily for Musgraves, her boyfriend Misa Arriaga already has his own ticket to the show because he’s in her band.

3. Have a good luck charm or two. Musgraves says hers is her boyfriend and her band. “We keep each other calm,” she told People.

4. Plan for a post-show celebration, win or lose. Her is to celebrate with “something bubbly.”

5. Prepare a speech. Or don’t. “I might have something prepared, but I’m sure it’ll go right out the window if I get a chance to speak,” Musgraves admitted.

6. Put comfort first. Musgraves says she has some ideas for what she might wear. “I’m pretty into textures, colors and cuts. And I always love a slightly retro vibe,” she says. But it sounds like she’ll make sure she feels good in whatever she wears. “Comfort doesn’t hurt either,” she said. “If you aren’t comfortable, it always shows.”

7. Remember the unforgettable performances. “Adele’s comeback a couple of years ago right after she had vocal surgery. She blew everyone away with her performance. She is flawless — what a voice,” Musgraves said of the Grammy moment that sticks in her mind.

Musgraves is nominated for four Grammys — best new artist, best country album, best country song for her own hit song “Merry Go ‘Round” and in the same category for Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart.”

Kacey Musgraves Joins Katy Perry’s Prismatic Tour!

What awesome news! Kacey will be joining Katy Perry’s North American Prismatic Tour this year. But only for certain dates – read below for the full details.

Katy Perry is adding some high-profile support to the North American dates of her upcoming Prismatic World Tour. While Icona Pop will be opening for the songstress during her UK dates, she’ll be joined in the United States and Canada by Capital Cities, Kacey Musgraves and Tegan & Sara (covering three different regions as the tour moves through North America).

Capital Cities will tour with Perry from June 22 through August 7, covering East Coast shows; Kacey Musgraves joins on August 10 as the tour moves through the midwest and central Canada; then Tegan & Sara come aboard on September 10 as the tour moves down the West Coast and through the South. (Not sure why Canadian electropoppers Tegan & Sara are playing Memphis, Tennessee while country star Musgraves is performing in Calgary, Alberta — but hey! Best not to argue.)

Regardless, it’s a testament to Perry’s exceptional taste — all three artists are critically beloved with rising commercial prominence — and it should make the Prismatic Tour all the more worth seeing.

Kacey Musgraves Performing at 2014 Grammy Awards

How awesome is this!? Our favorite Kacey Musgraves is set to hit the stage at the Grammys, which air January 26th! Be sure to stay tuned to Kacey-Musgraves.net on the night of the Grammys for the updates and photos of Kacey’s arrival, performance, and press photos.

Kacey Musgraves had a big year in 2014, and she’s starting off 2014 with a bang, too — with a performance at the 2014 Grammy Awards!

The 56th annual Grammy Awards are shaping up to be quite the country music party, much to the delight of fans. Musgraves is among the just-released names of performers, but there are many other country stars booked to hit the stage too. The 2014 Grammys will bring an exciting collaboration with Blake Shelton, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Kris Kristofferson. Plus, Keith Urban will perform!

Taylor Swift was also previously announced as part of the lineup, which includes other superstars such as John Legend, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Paul McCartney, Ringo Star and a duet between Sara Bareilles and Carole King.

Although some artists — like seven-time Grammy winner Swift and Urban — have previous experience showing off their talent during the biggest night in all of music, this is Musgraves’ first time on the Grammy stage. Nevertheless, she has an impressive four nods! They include Best New Artist, Best Country Album, plus two nominations in Best Country Song for ‘Mama’s Broken Heart’ and ‘Merry Go ‘Round.’

Will Musgraves rule the Grammys, or will Swift be a big winner? They’re up for four Grammys each, and the competition is tight!

The 2014 Grammys will take place live on Sunday, Jan. 26, airing on CBS from the Staples Center in Los Angeles at 8PM ET.

Deana Carter Talks About Writing Session with Kacey Musgraves

Aww, this interview makes me happy. The amazing country singer Deana Carter was asked about her experience in writing with Kacey recently. The two had a great time and apparently wrote some awesome stuff! Deana had nothing but nice things to say about Kacey, which is why I think you’ll enjoy reading this. ♥

Thanks to Deana Carter, I still have days when I think to myself, “Did I shave my legs for this?” That song of hers, from her 1996 debut album of the same name, was everything I was loving about country music back then. I mean, what woman couldn’t relate to that moment when you think, “It’s perfectly clear, between the TV and beer, I won’t get so much as a kiss”?

So I’m thrilled Carter is back to making music and writing with some of the other insightful poets in country music, including Kimberly Perry and Kacey Musgraves.

This is how Carter described her writing session with Musgraves, in a story in American Songwriter magazine.

“When I sat with her and watched how she played guitar — she had such open tunings and cool ideas — I was like, ‘I used to be that way. I used to just not worry about it and just create,'” Carter said. “It was so refreshing to be with her and do that.”

One of the songs that came out of that session is “That’s Just Me,” which Carter says has Dolly Parton roots to it.

“It talks about the roots of who we are and making the best of a situation,” Carter said. “The lyric says, ‘It’s not the crown that makes the queen.’ Just cool little lyrics that now, seeing her whole career and how she writes and us together, it was just a real good match. It was serendipity.”

But the best story within this story is the one where Carter talks about how fast some of the songs came for her and Musgraves.

“That first writing appointment, we got the song done in, like, two hours. So we were going, ‘OK, we can make happy hour,'” Carter recalled. “There were some other people writing in the building, and we were giving them grief because we had just gone in and written our song and they were struggling. That first one was just a gift. We hit it off. She liked me, I loved her, we sat and wrote, and it was done. I thought, ‘This is it.'”

No word on whether the two actually made it to a happy hour or not.

The Next Generation of Country Music: Kacey Musgraves

Kacey is featured in the January 2014 issue of Southern Living Magazine – out now! Arist: Kacey Musgraves

Home Base: Nashville, Tennessee

Country music has always had a soft spot for rebels, but it’s never met one quite like Kacey Musgraves. After appearing on Nashville Star in 2007, and cowriting songs for Miranda Lambert and ABC’s Nashville, Kacey’s fourth record, Same Trailer Different Park, finally nudged her into the spotlight last year. Her music easily found fans among the country faithful, but the Texas native’s pop-rock production style—plus her knife-sharp wit, which takes aim at social conventions skirted by mainstream country—has helped win her fans among crowds less inclined toward twang. “If you save yourself for marriage, you’re a bore/If you don’t save yourself for marriage, you’re a horr…ible person,” she sarcastically drawls on “Follow Your Arrow.” She may have raised some traditionalists’ eyebrows, but she’s got a hit record, chart-topping singles, a globe-trotting tour, and as many 2013 CMA nominations as Taylor Swift to show for it. Though the past year has done a number on her bucket list, there’s at least one item left: a headlining gig at the Ryman Auditorium. She may be a rebel, but she hasn’t forgotten her roots. “It’s ridiculous to think that you’re on the same stage as Johnny Cash and George Jones and Kitty Wells,” Kacey says. “It is kind of a hallowed place.”

Kacey Musgraves Ends the Year as One of the Best

Kacey begins the new year with 4 Grammy nominations, which is so awesome! I can’t wait to watch! Just a reminder: The Grammys will air on January 26th at 8pm EST on CBS! Here’s the article from CMT below:

Kacey Musgraves, we need to talk, sister!

As the year winds down and the country darling deservingly lands atop pretty much every “best of” list for 2013, I’m dying for another sit-down with the star to get a follow-up to her quote from this past spring.

“It’s weird just being inside of it, you know?” she said. “It’s kinda sometimes hard to get perspective on everything around me exactly because so many things are happening so fast.”

At the time of this quote and conversation, it was April 2013. Musgraves and I were chatting in Las Vegas at the Academy of Country Music Awards, where the buzz was all about a heartbreakingly raw and honest tune called “Merry Go ‘Round” and the no-nonsense, earnest wordsmith behind the song. Musgraves was attending the show that night with her very first nomination for female vocalist of the year even before her debut album, Same Trailer Different Park, had been released.

And when I say there was a buzz about Musgraves and the song, I mean an overwhelming buzz — a buzz that was perhaps a little too overwhelming for the singer-songwriter to absorb at that particular moment. At the time, she admitted there was so much excitement, it was hard to get an accurate perspective on how much her career and life were changing. But it was a whirlwind experience she wouldn’t trade for anything.

She told me during that interview, “I wanna be in this game for a long time and to be knocking out so many firsts on my bucket list so early on … it’s daunting a little bit. But it’s really cool, and I couldn’t be more thankful. … It’s just a little like, ‘Whoa!'”

Since our conversation in Las Vegas, Same Trailer Different Park hit No. 1 on the country albums chart. Musgraves rounded out a wildly-successful tour with Kenny Chesney, embarked on her first headlining tour and was invited by pop superstar Katy Perry to perform at the Hollywood Bowl. She charged into the CMA Awards this year with a whopping six total nominations — tying with Taylor Swift as the most-nominated artist. Musgraves took home the best new artist trophy.

Rolling Stone, the Hollywood Reporter and NPR have all named her to their best albums lists this year — and now Musgraves heads into 2014 with four Grammy nominations.

Is it everything she thought it would be? I certainly hope so. She’s worked hard to forge her own way in this business. I’m dying to get her perspective on all that has happened.

Kacey Musgraves Almost Didn’t Record ‘Follow Your Arrow’

Here’s something interesting! “Follow Your Arrow,” Kacey’s newest single, almost didn’t make it onto her album Same Trailer Different Park. I’m glad it did!

Kacey Musgraves‘ ‘Same Trailer, Different Park’ was almost released without its cornerstone song, ‘Follow Your Arrow.’ But the track made it onto the album just in time, after a last-minute January writing session.

“The record was basically done, and I was getting a lot of pressure because there were already a lot of great songs in the batch,” Musgraves says in an interview with Billboard. “But [co-writers] Brandy [Clark], Shane [McAnally] and I had these ideas, and they just really encapsulated where my head was at. I knew exactly what I wanted to do sonically, and I said, ‘This isn’t a complete record without them.’”

Luckily, the song was finished in time and a complete record was released. ‘Follow Your Arrow’ has been a groundbreaking country song — introducing the industry to some new ideas and helping make country more mainstream.

“It’s been much more embraced by the media and radio than even we were expecting,” Musgraves’ manager, Jason Owen, tells Billboard. “It’s just the first time in a long time that someone’s lyrically said the things Kacey says.”

“It’s not a gay song. We were just trying to list people that might have felt like underdogs at some point in their lives,” McAnally adds. “Sure, gay people have felt that way, but also fat people, or people who get outcasted at their churches for teenage pregnancy, or people who might smoke weed. Also, Brandy and I quickly realized the only word we could rhyme with ‘point’ was ‘joint.’”

‘Follow Your Arrow’ is already in the Top 40, and Musgraves has acquired some big name fans in mainstream music. Katy Perry invited her to perform at her We Can Survive benefit in October, and the duo held a songwriting session recently, which Musgraves calls “an awesome experience.”

Musgraves is embarking on Lady Antebellum‘s tour in 2014 before hopping through shows in Europe and Asia.

Kacey Musgraves Dishes on Her Family’s Christmas Scavenger Hunt

Kacey shares with us a fun game she plays with her grandfather every Christmas. Enjoy the snippet below.

Kacey Musgraves may be forging her own path in country music as the CMA New Artist of the Year, but when it comes to the holidays, she’s all about tradition. And one of her favorites revolves around someone very special — her grandfather.

Every year, the ‘Follow Your Arrow’ singer follows a scavenger hunt set by her Grandpa in order to snatch up her Christmas present.

“My Grandpa has a scavenger hunt puzzle that he does every year,” she dishes. “Even though I’m like too old for the puzzle, he’s like, ‘You’re still gonna do it.’ So, every year we do that, and it’s funny ‘cause sometimes you’ll find your present in the bathroom or in a tree or out behind the shed.”

Of course, Musgraves’ family game is not just any scavenger hunt — it’s pretty inventive. “He does a little trail of like either corn or a string to it,” the newcomer adds. “It’s very imaginative, and it’s something I look forward to every year. It’s a little tradition.”

In addition to scavenging her way to her presents, Musgraves loves one other holiday tradition — and this one is more traditional.

“Stockings. I love stockings,” she admits. “They’re kinda my favorite, ‘cause it’s like all the little goodies in there just are fun.”

While she loves the little goodies, the rising star has definitely received lots of big goodies in the form of country music success in 2013. Yep, this year has definitely seen her star rise, and we expect even bigger and better things from her in the year to come.
